Sara and I just got engaged!
I don’t even know where to start with this one. After months of planning, weeks of lies upon lies to my poor unsuspecting girlfriend (now fiancee), and countless hours of laser cutting foam core and hot glue gun finger burning, I can now spill the beans.
Sara and I got engaged at the 40000 gallery, in Chicago’s West Loop district, Friday night at 7:19pm precisely. But rather than trying to explain all the whats, whos and whys, I’ll let you see the video that I made that tells our story.
If you have questions, please add as comments and I’ll try my best to answer!
We’re so incredibly happy.
Update: I totally screwed something up. I somehow, totally, completely just deleted this post and have just managed to retreive a copy of it from Google cache. I was futzing around with this post when I accidentally pressed delete. ARGH! The worst part is that the 475 comments have gotten screwed up. I’ve now pasted the comments back but in a slightly messed up way. My apologies to everyone that submitted a comment.

my internet favorites for summer 2007
I’ve consumed some really great Internet lately. So, I think I’ll take the time to share some of my favorites. Last spring, notable author Kevin Smith wrote what basically amounted to a short story of the drug addiction his hetero-lover…

That is the most beautiful proposal I have seen in such a long time ! Very unique. Wow Sara…You are a very lucky woman to have a man go to that extreme to ask you to marry him. I hope you two have a very fullfilling and loving life and what ever trials and tribulations you go through in life ….always reflect back to this moment !

Matthew,
The gallery owner, Britton Bertran, did ask me if I would be prepared to sell off some of it. I never would have thought of it unless he’d mentioned it.
I think that it would be cool if the installation could stay up for a bit. I’ll have to check in with Britton and see what to do next with it.
I think the best thing would be to hear of other couples being inspired to get married from this work.

OK - I got I tuba fuel, and after alot of work My early muir owl, but what on earth is Serge Gandaora? clues at least?
Comment by anonymous — August 20, 2007 @ 8:27 pm
71.
Aha! finally, the last clue is being discovered. It’s another anagram of course, but this one is trickier.
The name of the artist could have just been my name, but it’s kinda short so I threw in Sara’s too. So, “George and Sara” became, “Serge Gandaora”.
Comment by est1976 — August 20, 2007 @ 8:33 pm
72.
Congratulations to you both! What a creative spirit you have. The song you chose for the video also is beautiful. Can you tell me who the artist is and the song title?
Comment by Rob — August 20, 2007 @ 8:46 pm

I tuba fuel = Beautiful
My early muir owl = Will you marry me
Serge Gandaora = George and Sara (or Sara and George)
Comment by Anonymous — August 20, 2007 @ 8:51 pm

Ok - now I get it. Your family name must be some anagram on Sandora, George.
Comment by anonymous — August 20, 2007 @ 8:59 pm

Okay,
As a single guy (living in Chicago, no less)… I tend to think of “proposal stories” as kind of, to put it in the PC words of NBC’s “The Office,” “faggy.”
However, this was pretty sweet. (No, not like “that’s so sweet… here are some flowers and chocolates.” More like, “cool, dude.”)
Comment by Berklie — August 20, 2007 @ 9:01 pm

I expected a hidden message to appear in the background after lights hit the cardboard from two or three different angles. That would be cool. Fake art show with cardboard saying marry me… What are all you people so gaga over? It’s a nice gesture sure. I’m guessing girls now days are just use to getting a plastic bubble ring thrown at them or something.

What a wonderful video.
There isn’t much this random stranger can add to what everyone else has said, except toast you both:
May there be a generation of children on the children of your children.
Health and long life to you, land without rent to you, a child every year to you.
May the roof above you never fall in,
And those gathered beneath it never fall out.
Here’s to health, peace and prosperity. May the flower of love never be nipped by the frost of disappointment, nor shadow of grief fall among your family and friends.
May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends.
And may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.
May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.
May I see you grey and combing your grandchildren’s hair.
Best Wishes you two.
Cheers

Seeing this video has really started the creative wheels to kick in high gear! I just wanted to say great job and to commend on your dedication you have put forth to make this event in both of your lives happen.
Not only that, but the rest of the world can enjoy it and say ‘wow…. this man has shown his love for this woman in a way that most have not seen and has captured the imagination of other men, who truly love their women, to come up with ways of expressing that love in a great way.’
To you, sir, I say thank you for sharing and good luck.

Sara, you silly girl!! How can you fall for a cheap trick like this?
Any man can come up with this abstract whatyoumightcallit art, spent weeks visualising it on the computer, get hold of a whole bunch of white foams and then used the laser cutting thingamyjig (that we all have lying about in our house….naturally) to cut out the letters and burning the fingers along the way, befriend a gallery owner to give you a space for a week or so, install the ‘art work’ over 4 days (and record it using time-lapse photography to show that you actually did the work), find someone to pretend to be the artist, write up a fake blurb about the exhibition, go and buy the all important ring (…pause for a sharp in-take of breadth) and then invite your friends along on the day itself, have the ‘artist’ rambles on about some gibberish talk on his supposed piece of art, make sure someone’s there to capture the moment when he drops down on one knee once he positioned his girfriend at a place which reveals the words ‘Will You Marry Me’ and hope that she says yes?
What’s the big deal??
Your soon-to-be brother-in-law, Len

congrats on your engagement and creativity. my husband told me that channel 11 was doing a story on volunteers across america. i saw faxes of waivers, etc. come across the fax machine. i went to the shedd and watch him dive. his friends where all around. he gave his presentation and said “now i have a question for an audience memeber” and asked me to marry him–underwater–in front of about 80 strangers.

My congratulations to the birde, and condolences to the groom.
The truth is that more than 67% (no, not 50% - do your homework) of marriages will end in divorce. 92% of the time it will be initiated by the woman for no other reason than she is “unfulfilled” – oh, and because she gets the kids, the house, at least ½ the assets and most of his future after tax income for the next 18 years. The man will get raked over in family court. He will lose the house and his kids. He will see his kids 2 out of 14 days (if the ex doesn’t level unsubstantiated “abuse” claims.) He will be forced to hand over 40-50% of his take-home pay. If he loses his job due to illness or downsizing, the State will toss him in jail. While jailed the arrearage will grow and the state will charge interest. The State will revoke his driver’s and professional licenses, make him virtually unemployable.
If you were to take up sky-diving, and the instructor informed you that 67% of the parachutes were defective, would you take the plunge?
The men’s Marriage Strike is alive and well, thank you.

I thought for many days about just deleting this comment but I’ve kept it up as I think it brings up a rather disappointing fact. Many, many people have come to regard marriage with such suspicion that its lost all meaning.
I’m sorry that there are becoming fewer and fewer examples of strong, healthy, respectful relationships and marriages.
Obviously, in under 5 years (by all accounts) I could be bitter, twisted and completely jaded too.

Hey, I watched your video and it was great. I like the artistic touch.
I wanted you guys to take a look at my recent proposal to my girlfriend, now fiancee. It was a surprise engagement proposal that I did this past Saturday inside of a museum.
I would like to publically recognize the Manassas Museum and the Director,
John Verrill, for allowing me to do this. I uploaded the video to YouTube
and posted the link below.
BTW, I’m an A/V person so it is not uncommon for me to be carrying a camcorder wherever I go. Anyways, take a look. Thanks for watching if you do.
